Training and development differ in scope, purpose and time-frame; they are not the same work.

Training and development are related but distinct:

  1. Meaning/scope — Training is the process of increasing the knowledge and specific skills of an employee for doing a particular job. Development is a wider process concerned with the all-round growth of an employee's personality, knowledge and abilities for future responsibilities.

  2. Focus — Training is job-centred and improves present job performance; development is career/person-centred and prepares the employee (especially managers) for higher future roles.

  3. Time-frame — Training is usually short-term and skill-specific; development is a continuous, long-term process.
