The MAC address is a permanent, hardware-level identifier assigned to a network interface card (NIC). You can find it using command-line tools (ipconfig on Windows, ifconfig or ip link on Linux/macOS) or through system settings, and it appears as a 12-character hexadecimal string (e.g., 00:1A:2B:3C:4D:5E).

This is a plain theory question — it asks how to discover the MAC address, not to write code or pick an option. The answer should explain the concept first, then give the practical methods.

Why MAC Address Discovery Matters

Every device that connects to a network — your laptop, phone, smart TV — has a network interface card (NIC) inside it. That NIC is given a unique, factory-burned identifier called the Media Access Control (MAC) address. Unlike an IP address, which can change when you move between networks, the MAC address is permanent (though it can be spoofed). Knowing how to find it is essential for network troubleshooting, setting up MAC filtering on a router, or identifying your device on a local network.

The MAC address is 48 bits long, usually written as six pairs of hexadecimal digits separated by colons or hyphens — for example, A4:5E:60:B7:8C:9D. The first three pairs identify the manufacturer (the OUI — Organizationally Unique Identifier), and the last three are the device-specific serial number.

How to Find the MAC Address

You can discover your MAC address through the operating system's command line or graphical interface. Here are the standard methods for each major OS.

On Windows
  1. Using Command Prompt (fastest)

Press Win + R, type cmd, and hit Enter. In the terminal, run:

    ipconfig /all

Look for the section labelled Ethernet adapter (for wired) or Wireless LAN adapter (for Wi-Fi). The line that says Physical Address is your MAC address — it will look like 00-1A-2B-3C-4D-5E (with hyphens instead of colons).

  2. Using Settings (GUI)

Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Status > View hardware and connection properties. Scroll down to find the MAC address for each adapter.

Tip

On Windows, getmac is a shorter command that prints only the MAC addresses of all adapters, without the clutter of ipconfig /all.

On Linux / macOS
  1. Using Terminal

    Open a terminal and type:

    ifconfig

Look for the interface name (e.g., eth0 for Ethernet, wlan0 for Wi-Fi, en0 on macOS). The MAC address appears after ether (on Linux) or ether (on macOS). For example:

    eth0: flags=4163<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,MULTICAST> mtu 1500
          inet 192.168.1.10 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.1.255
          ether 00:1a:2b:3c:4d:5e txqueuelen 1000 (Ethernet)

The ether field gives the MAC address.

On modern Linux systems, ifconfig is deprecated. Use the newer ip command instead:

    ip link show

The MAC address appears after link/ether in the output.

  2. Using System Settings (macOS)

Go to System Preferences > Network > Advanced > Hardware. The MAC address is listed as the MAC Address or Ethernet ID.

Watch out

On macOS, the Wi-Fi MAC address shown in System Settings may be a rotating private address (if you have "Private Wi-Fi Address" enabled). For the true hardware MAC, use the terminal command ifconfig en0 | grep ether.
