How to read a box plot before filling the blanks
A box plot summarises each subject's marks with five landmarks:
- the median — the horizontal line inside the box — the middle mark, with half the students above it and half below;
- the box — drawn from the lower quartile (Q1) up to the upper quartile (Q3) — it holds the middle 50% of the marks, so a short box means the marks are tightly clustered;
- the whiskers — the lines reaching out of the box to the smallest and largest ordinary marks;
- the outliers — individual points drawn beyond the whiskers, marking marks that are unusually far from the rest.
So "highest value" is the topmost point drawn for a subject, "lowest value" is the bottommost, and an "outlier" is a lone point standing away from that subject's box and whiskers.
