Equilibrium (Stability / Balance)
When we say that something is stable or balanced, we usually mean that it is not easily upset — it takes real effort to topple it. An unstable object, by contrast, is tipped over easily. For a student of CBSE Class 12 Physical Education, equilibrium is one of the most practical ideas in the Biomechanics and Sports unit, because stability is needed to perform almost every sporting skill well.
Equilibrium is closely tied to the centre of gravity (CG). The CG shifts with every change in posture. In the ordinary standing posture it lies near the centre of the upper pelvic region (its exact spot differs slightly for males and females), and it moves each time the body takes up a new position. A large part of any skilled movement is the continual adjustment of the body segments to counteract these shifts and keep the centre of gravity under control.
Equilibrium is a state of balance — a stable situation in which the opposing forces acting on the body cancel each other out and no change in motion is taking place. …
