Gomukhasana

Gomukhasana (cow-face pose) is also recommended as a preventive asana for hypertension, which is why the CBSE Class 12 Physical Education textbook lists it again here. To avoid repeating the same posture, the book does not re-describe it in this section.

Its full name-meaning, step-by-step technique, breathing pattern, benefits and contraindications — along with its posture figure — are given earlier under section 3.2.10 (Asanas to Prevent Diabetes Mellitus). The textbook marks this with a short cross-reference: See 3.2.10.

Why Gomukhasana helps manage hypertension

Sitting still in a held stretch with the arms clasped behind the back and the breath flowing slowly and evenly gives the nervous system a sustained period of calm, unhurried attention, very different from the rapid breathing of vigorous exercise, which can temporarily raise blood pressure. The steady, seated nature of Gomukhasana makes it one of the gentler asanas in the hypertension sequence, useful for patients who need to avoid any sudden exertion.

Specific benefits for hypertension

  • A seated, low-exertion stretch that calms the nervous system through slow, sustained breathing.
  • Improves flexibility of the hip joints and shoulders, reducing general muscular tension linked with chronic stress.
  • Improves circulation to the arms and legs without raising the heart rate sharply.
  • Complements Vakrasana and Uttan Mandukasana as a set of calm, seated postures for hypertension.
