Gomukhasana

Gomukhasana (cow-face pose) is also recommended as a preventive asana for back pain and arthritis, which is why the CBSE Class 12 Physical Education textbook lists it again here. To avoid repeating the same posture, the book does not re-describe it in this section.

Its full name-meaning, step-by-step technique, breathing pattern, benefits and contraindications — along with its posture figure — are given earlier under section 3.2.10 (Asanas to Prevent Diabetes Mellitus). The textbook marks this with a short cross-reference: See 3.2.10.

Why Gomukhasana helps with back pain and arthritis

The seated cross-legged base of Gomukhasana works the hip joints through a deep, controlled range of motion, which keeps them from stiffening; hip stiffness very often shows up as, or worsens, lower back pain, since the hips and lower spine move as a connected chain. The overhead-and-behind-the-back arm position also mobilises the shoulder joints, which are another common site for arthritic stiffness.

Specific benefits for back pain and arthritis

  • Increases hip-joint flexibility, easing the compensatory strain that stiff hips place on the lower back.
  • Stretches and tones the chest and shoulder muscles, keeping the shoulder joints mobile.
  • The knee flexion in the pose can help heal certain kinds of knee weakness, provided there is no ligament tear, useful given how often knee and hip arthritis occur together.
  • Improves overall posture through the combined hip and shoulder opening.
