The Bt toxin is stored as an inactive protoxin crystal; it is activated only by the alkaline pH of an insect gut, so it never harms the Bacillus thuringiensis that makes it.

From the CBSE/NCERT Biotechnology and its Applications chapter:

  1. Bacillus thuringiensis produces the insecticidal Cry protein as an inactive protoxin — a crystalline, insoluble form.
  2. Inside the bacterium the pH is roughly neutral, so the protoxin cannot dissolve or activate; it does the bacterium no harm.
  3. When an insect eats the crystal, the insect's alkaline midgut solubilises it and gut proteases convert it into the active toxin.
  4. The active toxin then binds the insect's midgut cells, creating pores that kill the insect. …
