HGP was a 13-year international project that sequenced the entire human genome and catalogued its genes, revealing far fewer genes than expected and that humans are 99.9% genetically identical.

The Human Genome Project (HGP) was a mega international collaborative project (1990–2003, coordinated by the US Department of Energy and NIH along with other countries) with the goal of determining the complete sequence of the ~3.2 billion base pairs that make up human DNA, and identifying all the genes present in it.

Methods used: Two major approaches — (i) Expressed Sequence Tags (ESTs), identifying all genes expressed as RNA, and (ii) Sequence Annotation, sequencing the whole genome (including non-coding regions) and later assigning gene locations.

Salient features/findings of HGP:

  1. The human genome contains about 3.2 billion (3164.7 million) base pairs.
  2. The average gene consists of about 3,000 bases, but sizes vary widely.
  3. Total number of genes is only about 20,000–25,000, far fewer than earlier predicted (~1,00,000).
  4. Chromosome 1 has the most genes (2,968), and the Y chromosome has the fewest.
  5. Functions are unknown for over 50% of the discovered genes. …
