Q.In the reaction of zinc with dilute hydrochloric acid, the volume of hydrogen gas collected is plotted against time. The curve starts at the origin (zero volume at zero time) and rises, gradually levelling off. Volumes read from the curve are: V1V_1 at t=20 st=20\text{ s}, V2V_2 at t=30 st=30\text{ s}, V3V_3 at t=40 st=40\text{ s}, with larger volumes V4V_4 and V5V_5 near t=50 st=50\text{ s}. On this basis, mark the correct expression for the average rate of the reaction up to 40 seconds.

(i) Average rate up to 40 s is V3−V240\dfrac{V_3 - V_2}{40}
(ii) Average rate up to 40 s is V3−V240−30\dfrac{V_3 - V_2}{40 - 30}
(iii) Average rate up to 40 s is V340\dfrac{V_3}{40}
(iv) Average rate up to 40 s is V3−V140−20\dfrac{V_3 - V_1}{40 - 20}

Average rate over an interval =change in amounttime interval=\dfrac{\text{change in amount}}{\text{time interval}}. 'Up to 40 s' means from t=0t=0 (where V=0V=0) to t=40 st=40\text{ s} (where the volume is V3V_3), so the average rate is V340\dfrac{V_3}{40}.

Concept

The average rate of gas evolution between two times is the total volume of gas produced divided by the elapsed time.

Working

At t=0t=0 no hydrogen has been released, so V=0V=0. At t=40 st=40\text{ s} the volume read from the curve is V3V_3.

Average rate up to 40 s=V40−V040−0=V3−040=V340\text{Average rate up to }40\text{ s}=\frac{V_{40}-V_{0}}{40-0}=\frac{V_3-0}{40}=\frac{V_3}{40}
