(a) The SHE is the universal zero-reference electrode (Pt/H₂ gas/1 M H⁺). (b) By Faraday's first law, one Faraday of charge always liberates one gram-equivalent of any substance at an electrode.

(a) Standard (Normal) Hydrogen Electrode (SHE):

The SHE consists of a platinum electrode, coated with finely divided platinum black (to increase surface area/adsorb gas efficiently), dipped into a solution containing H+H^+ ions at 1 M (unit) concentration, with pure hydrogen gas bubbled over the electrode surface at 1 bar pressure, at 298 K. The half-reaction is:

2H(aq)++2e−⇌H2(g)2H^+_{(aq)} + 2e^- \rightleftharpoons H_{2(g)}

By international convention, the standard electrode potential of the SHE is assigned the value exactly 0.00 V0.00\,V at all temperatures. All other standard electrode potentials (E∘E^\circ) are measured relative to this reference by constructing a cell between the electrode of interest and the SHE.

(b) Amount deposited by 1 Faraday:
