The Standard Hydrogen Electrode is a platinised-Pt strip dipped in 1M H+H^+ with H2H_2 gas bubbled at 1 atm, and it is arbitrarily assigned E0=0.00 VE^0 = 0.00\ V.

Construction (labelled diagram description): A small platinum foil/strip coated with finely divided platinum black (to increase surface area and adsorb H2H_2 gas efficiently) is fixed at the bottom of a glass tube. The tube's side-arm has an inlet through which pure hydrogen gas is continuously bubbled at 1 atmosphere pressure over the platinum foil. The platinum foil is dipped in an acidic solution (e.g. dil. H2SO4H_2SO_4 or HCl) containing H+H^+ ions of exactly 1 mol/L (unit) concentration. The platinum foil is connected to an external circuit through a wire sealed into the glass tube, and to the other half-cell via a salt bridge.
