Osmosis needs a semipermeable membrane and moves only solvent; diffusion needs no membrane and moves solute or solvent, gas or liquid.

  1. What moves: In osmosis, only the SOLVENT molecules move, passing selectively through a semipermeable membrane from the region of lower solute concentration (or pure solvent) to the region of higher solute concentration. In diffusion, ANY substance — solute, solvent, gas, or liquid particles — can move from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration.

  2. Requirement of a membrane: Osmosis can occur ONLY when the two solutions are separated by a semipermeable membrane, which allows solvent molecules to pass but blocks solute molecules. Diffusion requires no membrane at all — it happens freely in gases, liquids, and even across a fully permeable membrane.
