Show one-one by assuming f(x1)=f(x2)f(x_1)=f(x_2) and deriving x1=x2x_1=x_2; show onto by solving f(x)=yf(x)=y for xx and confirming it always lands back in R\mathbb R.

f:R→R,f(x)=5x+34f:\mathbb R\to\mathbb R,\quad f(x)=\dfrac{5x+3}{4}.

One-one: Suppose f(x1)=f(x2)f(x_1)=f(x_2) for x1,x2∈Rx_1,x_2\in\mathbb R.

5x1+34=5x2+34  ⟹  5x1+3=5x2+3  ⟹  5x1=5x2  ⟹  x1=x2.\frac{5x_1+3}{4} = \frac{5x_2+3}{4} \implies 5x_1+3=5x_2+3 \implies 5x_1=5x_2 \implies x_1=x_2.

Since f(x1)=f(x2)f(x_1)=f(x_2) forces x1=x2x_1=x_2, ff is one-one (injective).

Onto: Take any y∈Ry\in\mathbb R (the codomain). We need x∈Rx\in\mathbb R with f(x)=yf(x)=y:

5x+34=y  ⟹  5x+3=4y  ⟹  x=4y−35.\frac{5x+3}{4}=y \implies 5x+3=4y \implies x=\frac{4y-3}{5}. …
