The photoelectric effect obeys four experimental laws that only the photon (particle) picture of light can explain; the Compton effect is another clear demonstration of light's particle nature.

(a) Laws of photoelectric effect:

  1. For light of a given frequency (above the threshold), the photoelectric current (i.e. the number of photoelectrons emitted per second) is directly proportional to the intensity of the incident light.
  2. The maximum kinetic energy of the emitted photoelectrons depends only on the frequency of the incident light (and the material), and is completely independent of the light's intensity.
  3. For every metal there is a minimum (threshold) frequency ν0\nu_0 below which no photoelectrons are emitted, no matter how intense the light is.
  4. Photoelectric emission is an (almost) instantaneous process — there is no appreciable time lag between the light striking the surface and electrons being ejected, even for very low intensities. …
