Threshold frequency/wavelength are the minimum-frequency / maximum-wavelength cutoffs of light below/above which the photoelectric effect cannot occur for a given metal, no matter how intense the light.

For a photoelectron to be emitted, an incident photon's energy must be at least equal to the metal's work function ϕ0\phi_0 (the minimum energy needed to free an electron from the metal surface).

Threshold frequency (ν0\nu_0): the minimum frequency of incident radiation that can just cause photoelectric emission from a given metal surface (with zero kinetic energy of the emitted electron). It is related to the work function by
