Self-inductance is a coil's property of opposing changes in the current flowing through itself; for a long solenoid it works out to L=μ0n2AlL = \mu_0 n^2 A l.

Definition: When a current II flows through a coil, it produces a magnetic flux Φ\Phi linked with the coil itself, proportional to II:

Φ=LI\Phi = LI

where LL is called the coefficient of self-induction (self-inductance) of the coil. If the current changes with time, the flux changes too, and by Faraday's law an emf is induced in the same coil, opposing the change (Lenz's law):

ε=−dΦdt=−LdIdt\varepsilon = -\frac{d\Phi}{dt} = -L\frac{dI}{dt}

So LL can also be defined as the emf induced per unit rate of change of current. Its SI unit is the henry (H).

Expression for a solenoid: Consider a long solenoid of length ll, cross-sectional area AA, with NN total turns (so n=N/ln = N/l turns per unit length), carrying current II. The magnetic field inside a long solenoid is uniform: …
