Every communication system, however complex, breaks down into three basic blocks: transmitter, communication channel, and receiver.

The elementary block diagram of a communication system is:

Information Source→Transmitter→Channel (Noise added here)→Receiver→Destination\text{Information Source} \to \text{Transmitter} \to \text{Channel (Noise added here)} \to \text{Receiver} \to \text{Destination}

  • Transmitter: processes the incoming message signal (e.g. via modulation) to make it suitable for transmission through the channel, and radiates/sends it.
  • Channel: the physical medium (wire, optical fibre, free space) that carries the signal from transmitter to receiver; noise gets added to the signal here.
  • Receiver: extracts (demodulates) the original message signal from the received, possibly weakened/noisy, signal and delivers it to the user/destination. …
