Electromagnets are made of soft iron because it is easy to magnetise strongly and easy to demagnetise once the current is switched off.

An electromagnet must be magnetised by the current in a surrounding coil, and must lose its magnetism almost completely when the current is switched off (otherwise it would behave like a permanent magnet, defeating its switchable purpose). The core material must therefore have:

  • High magnetic permeability — so it develops a strong magnetisation for even a modest magnetising field (from the coil current), giving a strong electromagnet.
  • Low retentivity (low residual magnetism) — so that when the current is switched off, almost none of the induced magnetism remains.
  • Low coercivity / narrow hysteresis loop — so very little energy is dissipated as heat in each magnetisation-demagnetisation cycle, and the material responds quickly. …
