Hysteresis is the phenomenon where a ferromagnetic material's magnetisation lags behind the applied magnetising field, so B and H trace a closed loop rather than a single curve over a cycle.

Explanation

When a ferromagnetic material is subjected to a magnetising field HH that is increased, decreased, reversed and increased again through a full cycle, the resulting magnetic induction BB inside the material does not retrace the same path it followed on the way up. Instead, BB lags behind HH at every stage -- when HH is reduced to zero, BB does not fall to zero but retains a residual value (retentivity), and a reversed field of a certain strength (coercivity) is needed to bring BB back to zero.
