Biot-Savart law gives dB = (mu0/4 pi)(I dl sin theta)/r^2; the SI unit of B is the tesla.

Biot-Savart's law: The small magnetic field dB produced at a point P by a current element of length dl carrying current I is:

  • directly proportional to the current I,
  • directly proportional to the element length dl,
  • directly proportional to sin theta, where theta is the angle between the element dl and the line joining it to P,
  • inversely proportional to the square of the distance r from the element to P.

Combining these:

dB = (mu0 / 4 pi) x (I dl sin theta) / r^2,

where mu0/4 pi = 10^-7 T m/A. The direction of dB is perpendicular to the plane containing dl and r (given by the right-hand rule).
