Mass defect is the difference between the sum of masses of free nucleons and the actual mass of the nucleus they form.

A nucleus with atomic number ZZ and mass number AA contains ZZ protons and (A−Z)(A-Z) neutrons. If these nucleons were free (unbound), their total mass would be Zmp+(A−Z)mnZm_p + (A-Z)m_n, where mpm_p and mnm_n are the mass of a free proton and neutron respectively. However, the actual measured mass MM of the bound nucleus is always slightly less than this sum, because some mass is converted into binding energy that holds the nucleus together (as per Einstein's E=mc2E=mc^2).
