TIR happens when light going from a denser to a rarer medium hits the interface beyond the critical angle, so it is entirely reflected back with no refracted ray.

When light travels from an optically denser medium (refractive index n1n_1) towards a rarer medium (n2<n1n_2 < n_1), by Snell's law the refracted ray bends away from the normal as the angle of incidence increases. At a particular angle of incidence, called the critical angle θc\theta_c (given by sin⁡θc=n2/n1\sin\theta_c = n_2/n_1), the refracted ray grazes along the interface (refraction angle = 90°). For any angle of incidence GREATER than θc\theta_c, no refraction is possible at all, and the entire light is reflected back into the denser medium — this is total internal reflection.
