A ledger is prepared from the journal through posting and balancing: an account is opened for each item, each journal debit and credit is transferred to the correct side of the correct account, folio references are entered, and every account is balanced.

Process step by step.

  1. Open the accounts. For every account appearing in the journal, open a separate account in the ledger in the standard 'T' (two-sided) form, headed with the account name.
  2. Post the debit. The account that was debited in the journal is entered on the debit side of that account, with the date, the words 'To …' followed by the name of the account credited, the J.F., and the amount.
  3. Post the credit. The account that was credited in the journal is entered on the credit side of that account, with the date, the words 'By …' followed by the name of the account debited, the J.F., and the amount.
  4. Enter folios. Record the ledger folio (L.F.) in the journal and the journal folio (J.F.) in the ledger, so each posting can be traced both ways.
  5. Balance the accounts. After all entries are posted, total both sides of each account; write the difference as 'Balance c/d' on the smaller side, total the two equal sides, and bring the balance down ('Balance b/d') on the opposite side for the next period.
