A field-study project: pick a company that does business electronically, interview people there, and report the practical advantages — with special attention to costs.

What to do (a model approach):

  • Select a suitable business unit: Choose a firm that visibly uses e-commerce or e-business — for example an online retailer, a bank offering net-banking, an airline/railway or travel-booking site, or even a local shop that now takes orders and payments online. A firm you can actually contact is best.
  • Plan your interview: Prepare a short set of questions for the people working there, covering:
    • Which functions are done electronically — buying from suppliers (B2B), selling to customers (B2C), inventory management, payments, accounting, and even recruitment/training (B2E)?
    • What benefits they experience day to day — wider market reach, speed of response, round-the-clock service, convenience, and movement towards paperless working.
    • What problems they face — low personal touch, technology needs, security/privacy concerns, or customer resistance.
  • Give special attention to costs (as the question asks): Ask how going electronic has changed:
    • Cost of setting up (little or no physical premises needed);
    • Operating cost (relying on a network of relationships rather than owning resources);
    • Marketing cost (reaching national/international customers cheaply);
    • Response time and cycle time (sequential processes becoming simultaneous). …
