Classified data is generally better than raw data: it organises a scattered mass of figures into meaningful groups, making the information concise, comparable and ready for analysis. The one drawback — loss of individual detail — is outweighed by these gains.

Raw data vs classified data

Raw (unclassified) data are figures in the order in which they were collected — a large, disorganised mass that is hard to grasp or use. Classified data arrange these figures into homogeneous groups on the basis of a common characteristic.

Why classified data is better

  • Condensed and concise: a huge body of raw figures is reduced to a few compact classes, so the whole dataset can be seen at a glance.
  • Easy to understand: organised groups make the essential features of the data clear.
  • Enables comparison: similar items are placed together, so groups can be compared readily.
  • Reveals patterns: similarities, differences and the general shape of the data (concentration, spread) become visible.
  • Ready for analysis: it is the necessary base for tabulation, diagrams and statistical calculation.

The one limitation …
