The concept (source citation ethics). Using a short text for study or a project can fall under fair dealing, but only honest acknowledgement separates legitimate quotation from plagiarism. Citation tells your reader exactly whose words/ideas these are and where to find the original.
Steps to credit the source properly
- Identify the source details while you still have the page open: author's name (or the organisation), title of the article, name of the website, the complete URL, the publication/last-updated date, and the date you accessed it.
- Mark the borrowed words: enclose verbatim text in quotation marks (or use an indented quote block for longer lines). If you paraphrase instead, the citation is still required — rewording does not remove the debt.
- Cite at the point of use: immediately after the quote/paraphrase, add an in-text citation or footnote in the style your school requires (APA, MLA, or a simple "Source: …" note). Example: Source: A. Kumar, "Digital India Initiatives", example-site.in, published 12 Mar 2020, accessed 5 Jul 2026.
- Add the full entry to your bibliography/references list at the end of the project, so all sources are collected in one place. …
