CBSE Makes Physical Education Compulsory in Schools
New Delhi: Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has introduced a streamlined and well-designed Health and Physical Education Programme to mainstream health and physical education in schools, especially for students of classes 9 to 12. This Programme will be introduced from next session and will be compulsory for all affiliated schools of the Board. "CBSE has decided to mainstream Health and Physical Education for classes IX to XII with the aim of holistic development of the child, leading to a well-balanced individual in all walks of life," said a statement from the board. "The aim of mainstreaming Health and Physical Education is also to enable the students to attain an optimum state of health. Therefore, CBSE aims to provide a focussed curriculum for Health and Physical Education imbued with Life Skills in all its affiliated schools," the statement added. Keeping this in view, CBSE has asked schools that while preparing the timetable for session 2018-19, one period every day may be reserved for Health and Physical Education especially for classes 9 to 12 from session 2018-19 onwards.

CBSE's 2018 move mainstreams Health and Physical Education because, as this unit's own definitions argue, PE is far more than sport - it is a tool for the holistic physical, mental, social and emotional development of every student, which is exactly why it cannot be left as an occasional, optional activity.

What the Programme likely includes: a dedicated, non-negotiable daily period (the clipping says "one period every day"), covering not just games/sports but health education and "Life Skills" content, aimed at measurable health outcomes rather than just recreation.

Why compulsory: the board's own statement ties it to "holistic development of the child" and attaining "an optimum state of health" - language that matches this unit's own definition of Physical Education as using movement to develop the physical, mental and emotional make-up of a person, not merely teach a sport. Leaving something this foundational optional risks many students never getting it at all.

Do students need it: yes - classes 9-12 are exactly when academic pressure peaks and physical activity tends to be cut first, even though this is also the stage where lifelong habits (fitness, stress management, teamwork) are formed. …
