Flowering plants have three tissue systems — epidermal, ground and vascular — each made of specific tissues.

On the basis of their structure and location, the tissues of a flowering plant are organised into three tissue systems:

  • Epidermal tissue system:

    • Forms the outermost covering of the whole plant body.
    • Consists of epidermal cells, stomata (each with guard cells), and epidermal appendages such as trichomes (on stems) and root hairs (on roots).
    • Usually covered by a cuticle on the aerial parts.
  • Ground (fundamental) tissue system:

    • Makes up the bulk of the plant body — all tissues except the epidermis and vascular bundles.
    • Consists of the simple tissues parenchyma, collenchyma and sclerenchyma.
    • Includes the cortex, pericycle, pith, medullary rays (in stems and roots) and the mesophyll (in leaves).
  • Vascular (conducting) tissue system: …
