Vital capacity is a key lung-function measurement (maximum air that can be exhaled after maximum inhalation); emphysema is a chronic disease, mainly from smoking, that destroys alveoli and shrinks vital capacity.

Vital capacity (VC):

  • It is the maximum volume of air a person can expel from the lungs after taking the deepest possible breath in.
  • VC = Tidal Volume + Inspiratory Reserve Volume + Expiratory Reserve Volume.
  • In a healthy adult, it is roughly 3500-4700 mL, varying with sex, age, height and physical conditioning (athletes have a higher VC).
  • Vital capacity is used clinically as an indicator of lung health and respiratory efficiency.

Emphysema:

  • It is a chronic respiratory disorder, most commonly caused by long-term cigarette smoking (also linked to chronic exposure to certain pollutants).
  • The walls of the alveoli are progressively damaged and break down, so that many small alveoli fuse into fewer, larger air spaces.
  • This greatly decreases the total surface area available for gas exchange (O2 uptake/CO2 removal), and the lungs also lose elasticity. …
