Diabetes mellitus:
- Cause: Insufficient secretion of insulin by the beta cells of the pancreatic islets of Langerhans, or the body's cells becoming resistant to insulin's action.
- Effect: Blood glucose level rises abnormally (hyperglycaemia); glucose spills into the urine (glucosuria) since the kidney can no longer reabsorb it all.
- Symptoms: Excessive thirst (polydipsia), excessive urination (polyuria), excessive hunger (polyphagia), weight loss, fatigue, and in severe/uncontrolled cases, ketoacidosis.
Diabetes insipidus (diuresis):
- Cause: Deficiency of the antidiuretic hormone (ADH, also called vasopressin) secreted by the posterior pituitary (or the kidney tubules failing to respond to ADH).
- Effect: The kidney's distal tubules/collecting ducts cannot reabsorb enough water back into the blood, so a very large volume of dilute (watery) urine is passed.
- Symptoms: Excessive urination (polyuria) of dilute urine, intense thirst, and risk of dehydration if fluid intake does not keep pace. …
