Six endocrine notes: PTH (raises blood Ca²⁺), thyroid hormone (raises metabolic rate), thymosin (immune/T-cell maturation), androgen (male sex hormone), estrogen (female sex hormone), and insulin/glucagon (glucose-lowering/glucose-raising pancreatic hormones).

  1. PTH (Parathyroid hormone): Secreted by the parathyroid glands; increases blood calcium level by promoting bone resorption, renal Ca²⁺ reabsorption, and (via activated vitamin D) intestinal Ca²⁺ absorption, while lowering blood phosphate.
  2. Thyroid hormone: Tri-iodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4), secreted by the thyroid gland (using iodine); they regulate the basal metabolic rate (BMR), are essential for normal growth and central nervous system/skeletal development, and also help maintain body temperature and support red blood cell production.
  3. Thymosin: Secreted by the thymus gland; promotes the differentiation and maturation of T-lymphocytes, playing a central role in developing cell-mediated immunity; thymus (and thymosin secretion) is most active in childhood and regresses with age.
  4. Androgen (e.g. testosterone): The principal male sex hormone, secreted mainly by the Leydig (interstitial) cells of the testis; regulates the development of male accessory reproductive organs, secondary sexual characters (facial hair, deep voice, muscle build), spermatogenesis, and male sexual behaviour. …
