The pectoral girdle (scapula and clavicle) anchors the arms at the glenoid cavity, while the pelvic girdle (fused coxal bones) anchors the legs at the acetabulum and joins itself at the pubic symphysis.

Both girdles let a pair of limbs articulate with the axial skeleton, and each is made of two halves, but their bone composition and specific structures differ:

  • Pectoral girdle: each half consists of a scapula (a large, flat, triangular bone in the dorsal thorax, bearing a ridge called the spine that extends into the acromion) and a clavicle (a long, slender, curved bone, commonly the collar bone, which joins the acromion).
