Solanaceae (the potato family) has actinomorphic, bisexual, pentamerous flowers — gamosepalous calyx, gamopetalous corolla, 5 epipetalous stamens, and a bicarpellary, obliquely-placed, superior ovary — summarised in the floral formula Br, ⊕, K(5), C(5), A5, G(2).

Family: Solanaceae (the potato family)

Vegetative characters:

  • Habit: Mostly herbs, shrubs, and occasionally small trees (e.g. Solanum tuberosum — potato, Solanum melongena — brinjal, Solanum lycopersicum — tomato, Capsicum annuum — chilli, Datura, Nicotiana tabacum — tobacco, Petunia, Withania somnifera — ashwagandha).
  • Root: Branched tap root system.
  • Stem: Herbaceous or woody, aerial, erect, cylindrical, branched, solid or hollow; often with underground stem tubers in Solanum tuberosum.
  • Leaves: Alternate, simple (rarely pinnately compound), exstipulate, with reticulate venation.

Floral characters:

  • Inflorescence: Solitary/axillary or cymose.
  • Flower: Bisexual, actinomorphic (regular, radially symmetric), pentamerous, complete, hypogynous.
  • Calyx: 5 sepals, gamosepalous (fused), persistent, valvate/imbricate aestivation.
  • Corolla: 5 petals, gamopetalous (fused), often plicate/valvate aestivation, usually a rotate or funnel-shaped corolla.
  • Androecium: 5 stamens, epipetalous (attached to the petal tube), alternating with the petals, filaments free but anthers may cohere.
  • Gynoecium: Bicarpellary, syncarpous (carpels fused), ovary superior, but obliquely placed (a diagnostic family feature), bilocular with many ovules on axile placentation.
  • Fruit: Berry (e.g. tomato, brinjal) or capsule (e.g. Datura).

Floral formula: Br, ⊕, K(5), C(5), A5, G(2) …
