The limiting factor is the single factor, among many acting together on a process, that is nearest to its minimum — and it alone determines the rate of the process at that time.

This idea was formalised by Blackman (1905) as the Law of Limiting Factors: "When a process is conditioned as to its rate by a number of separate factors, the rate of the process is limited by the pace of the slowest factor."

  • A physiological process such as photosynthesis is affected by multiple external factors simultaneously — light intensity, CO2 concentration, temperature, and water availability.
  • If any one of these factors is present in a quantity/intensity well below what is needed, that shortfall factor alone controls (limits) the overall rate of the process, no matter how favourable the other factors are.
  • For example, on a bright sunny day with plenty of light and water but very low atmospheric CO2, the rate of photosynthesis is limited by CO2 availability, not by light — increasing light further will not raise the photosynthetic rate until CO2 is increased. …
