EM radiation is a transverse wave of oscillating electric and magnetic fields; the EM spectrum ranges (by decreasing energy) from gamma rays to radio waves.

James Clerk Maxwell proposed that electromagnetic radiation consists of an oscillating electric field (E) and an oscillating magnetic field (B), perpendicular to each other and both perpendicular to the direction in which the wave travels. Unlike sound waves, EM waves do not need a material medium and can travel through vacuum, all at the same speed in vacuum, the speed of light, c is about 3 x 10^8 m/s. The wave is characterised by: wavelength (the distance between two successive crests), frequency (the number of waves passing a point per second), and the relation c = frequency x wavelength. Higher frequency (shorter wavelength) radiation carries more energy per photon (E = h x frequency).
