Open system: can freely exchange BOTH matter (mass) and energy (heat/work) with its surroundings. Example: an open beaker of hot water - steam (matter) escapes and heat (energy) is lost to the air.

Closed system: can exchange energy (heat and/or work) with its surroundings, but NOT matter - the boundary is impermeable to mass transfer, though not necessarily to heat. Example: a sealed, rigid gas cylinder - no gas can enter or leave, but the cylinder walls can conduct heat in or out.
