Molar specific heat depends on the gas's degrees of freedom (its atomicity) and on whether heat is supplied at constant volume or constant pressure.

By the law of equipartition of energy, each degree of freedom of a gas molecule contributes (1/2)R to its molar internal energy per kelvin. So Cv = (f/2)R, where f is the number of degrees of freedom (f = 3 for monatomic gases, f = 5 for diatomic gases at ordinary temperatures, more for polyatomic gases). This means the value of the molar specific heat is different for different gases depending on how many atoms the molecule has (its atomicity/structure). Second, the same gas has two different molar specific heats: Cv (at constant volume, where all the heat goes into raising internal energy) and Cp (at constant pressure, where some heat also does external work as the gas expands), with Cp > Cv always, related by Mayer's relation Cp - Cv = R.
