For two wires of the same material with radii in ratio 2:1, stretched by the same force, the stresses developed are in ratio 1:4 (inversely as the square of the radii).

Stress is defined as sigma = F/A, where A = pi*r^2 is the cross-sectional area of the wire.

Let the radii be r1 = 2r and r2 = r (ratio r1:r2 = 2:1). Their cross-sectional areas are:

A1 = pi*(2r)^2 = 4pir^2

A2 = pi*r^2

So A1:A2 = 4:1.

Since the same force F is applied to both wires:

sigma1 = F/A1 = F/(4pir^2)

sigma2 = F/A2 = F/(pi*r^2)

sigma1/sigma2 = A2/A1 = 1/4
