Hooke's Law states that within the elastic limit, stress is directly proportional to strain.

Hooke's Law states that for a body being deformed, as long as the deformation stays within the elastic limit of the material, the stress developed in the body is directly proportional to the strain produced:

Stress∝Strain⇒Stress=E×Strain\text{Stress} \propto \text{Strain} \quad\Rightarrow\quad \text{Stress} = E \times \text{Strain}

where the constant of proportionality EE is called the modulus of elasticity of the material (Young's modulus, bulk modulus, or shear modulus, depending on the type of deformation).

Stress–strain curve: if stress (y-axis) is plotted against strain (x-axis) as a material is gradually loaded:

  • From the origin up to a point P (the proportional limit), the graph is a straight line through the origin — this is the region where Hooke's Law holds exactly, and the slope of this line is the modulus of elasticity. …
