Young's modulus Y is defined as longitudinal stress divided by longitudinal strain; for a wire of original length L, area A, stretched by Δl under tension F, Y = FL/(AΔl).

Consider a wire (or rod) of natural length L and uniform cross-sectional area A, fixed at one end and pulled by a force F applied along its length at the other end, causing it to stretch by an amount Δl (within the elastic limit, so it obeys Hooke's law).

Longitudinal (tensile) stress is defined as the restoring force per unit cross-sectional area:

stress = F / A

Longitudinal strain is defined as the fractional change in length:

strain = Δl / L

By Hooke's law, within the elastic limit, stress is directly proportional to strain:

stress ∝ strain ⟹ stress = Y × strain

where the constant of proportionality Y is called Young's modulus of elasticity of the material. Rearranging:
