For uniformly accelerated motion, the three kinematic equations are v = u + at, s = ut + (1/2)at², and v² = u² + 2as.

Let an object start with initial velocity u and move with a constant acceleration a. Let v be its velocity after time t, and s the displacement covered in that time.

  1. Velocity–time relation: acceleration is the rate of change of velocity, a = (v−u)/t, so rearranging:

v = u + at

  1. Displacement–time relation: since velocity increases uniformly from u to v, the average velocity over the interval is (u+v)/2. Displacement = average velocity × time:

s = [(u+v)/2] t = [(u + u+at)/2] t = ut + (1/2) a t²

so s = ut + (1/2) a t²
