Since volume expansion happens along all three dimensions of a solid, gamma = 3 alpha follows directly from V = L^3.

Consider a cube of an isotropic solid with side length L at some temperature. Its volume is V = L^3. When the temperature increases by a small amount dT, each side expands (by definition of the coefficient of linear expansion alpha) as:

dL = alpha × L × dT

Differentiating V = L^3 with respect to L:

dV = 3 L^2 dL

Substituting dL = alpha L dT:

dV = 3 L^2 (alpha L dT) = 3 alpha L^3 dT = 3 alpha V dT

But by definition, the coefficient of volume expansion gamma satisfies dV = gamma V dT. Comparing the two expressions for dV:

gamma V dT = 3 alpha V dT

gamma = 3 alpha
