As a longitudinal sound wave passes through a medium, each particle oscillates back and forth about its own equilibrium position and returns there once the wave has passed -- there is no net transport of matter. What genuinely propagates from source to destination is energy, transferred from particle to neighbouring particle through the oscillation. The correct option is (B) energy.

What actually moves in a wave

When a longitudinal wave (like sound) travels through air, it's tempting to picture "something" physically flowing from the source to your ear. But look closely at what an individual air molecule does: it oscillates back and forth parallel to the wave's direction of travel, around a fixed mean position, then returns to (near) that same position once the disturbance has passed. The molecule doesn't ride along with the wave -- it just passes the disturbance to its neighbour.

Checking each option

Matter is NOT transmitted. If matter were carried along with the wave, you'd feel a gust of wind every time someone spoke nearby -- you don't. The medium's particles stay, on average, where they started; only the pattern of compressions and rarefactions moves. …
