Transverse and longitudinal waves differ mainly in the direction of particle vibration relative to wave travel, and in the pattern this produces.

Two key differences:

  1. Direction of vibration: In a transverse wave, the particles of the medium vibrate perpendicular to the direction in which the wave travels (e.g., a wave on a stretched string). In a longitudinal wave, the particles vibrate parallel to (along) the direction of wave travel (e.g., a sound wave in air).

  2. Pattern formed: A transverse wave shows alternating crests (points of maximum positive displacement) and troughs (points of maximum negative displacement). A longitudinal wave shows alternating compressions (regions where particles bunch closer together, higher pressure/density) and rarefactions (regions where particles spread farther apart, lower pressure/density).
