The Debentures A/c is always credited with the nominal (face) value of ₹1,00,000 in every case. A premium ON ISSUE is credited to Securities Premium Reserve A/c; a discount ON ISSUE is debited to Discount on Issue of Debentures A/c; a premium ON REDEMPTION is debited to Loss on Issue of Debentures A/c and credited to Premium on Redemption of Debentures A/c. When both a discount on issue and a premium on redemption exist together, Loss on Issue of Debentures A/c carries their combined total.

Concept

Six combinations of issue price and redemption price are commonly tested:

  1. at par/at par,
  2. at discount/at par,
  3. at premium/at par,
  4. at par/at premium,
  5. at discount/at premium,
  6. at premium/at premium. Debentures A/c is credited only with the nominal value in every case — the actual cash received and the redemption obligation are recorded in separate accounts, never merged into the Debentures A/c itself.

Working Note

  • Nominal value of debentures in every case = ₹1,00,000 (1,000 debentures of ₹100 each)
  • Case 2: premium on issue = 5% of ₹1,00,000 = ₹5,000; cash received = ₹1,05,000
  • Case 3: discount on issue = 5% of ₹1,00,000 = ₹5,000; cash received = ₹95,000
  • Case 4: premium on redemption = 5% of ₹1,00,000 = ₹5,000; cash received = ₹1,00,000 (loss on issue = ₹5,000, being the redemption premium only)
  • Case 5: discount on issue = ₹5,000; premium on redemption = ₹5,000; total loss = ₹5,000 + ₹5,000 = ₹10,000; cash received = ₹95,000
  • Case 6: premium on issue = ₹5,000; premium on redemption = ₹5,000; cash received = ₹1,05,000; loss on issue = ₹5,000 (redemption premium only — the issue premium is credited separately to Securities Premium Reserve, not netted against the loss)
