Higher GDP need not mean higher welfare — unequal distribution and ignored externalities break the link. [Alternative numerical: NNP at FC = ₹900 crore.]

Option 1 — Why welfare may not rise with GDP (any two reasons):

  1. Unequal distribution of income: A rise in GDP tells us only about the total output; it says nothing about how that income is shared. If the additional income goes mainly to the rich while the poor gain little, overall welfare may not improve even though GDP has risen.

  2. Non-monetary exchanges and externalities: GDP leaves out non-market activities (such as unpaid domestic work) and ignores the negative externalities of growth — for example, pollution and environmental damage caused by more production reduce well-being but are not deducted from GDP. Hence welfare and GDP can move apart.

Option 2 — Calculation of National Income (NNP at FC):

Gross National Product at Market Price1,000

= Net National Product at Market Price (NNP at MP)800
