Total product curve of labour
Total product curve of labour

The total product curve of labour is an S-shaped curve: TP rises at an increasing rate, then at a decreasing rate, peaks, and finally falls as more labour is added to fixed capital.

In the RBSE/CBSE Class-12 production-and-costs chapter, when only labour is varied and all other inputs (like capital) are held fixed, the total product of labour (TP) passes through three phases, giving the curve its characteristic S-shape.

How to draw it:

  • Axes: X-axis = units of labour (L); Y-axis = total product (TP).
  • Phase 1 (increasing returns): From the origin the TP curve rises at an increasing rate (gets steeper) — marginal product is rising.
  • Phase 2 (diminishing returns): TP continues to rise but at a decreasing rate (gets flatter) — marginal product is positive but falling.
  • Peak: TP reaches its maximum point, where marginal product = 0. …
