A demand curve plots quantity demanded against price (downward-sloping); a rightward shift = increase in demand and a leftward shift = decrease in demand, both caused by changes in factors other than the good's own price.

(Answering the first alternative — demand curve and its shifts.)

What is a demand curve? A demand curve is a graph that shows the various quantities of a commodity a consumer is willing to buy at various prices, other things (income, tastes, prices of related goods) remaining constant. It normally slopes downward from left to right, reflecting the law of demand — a fall in price raises quantity demanded and a rise in price lowers it.

A change in the good's own price causes a movement along the same curve, but a change in other factors shifts the whole curve.

Rightward shift (increase in demand): When more of the good is demanded at the same price because of a favourable change — a rise in income (for a normal good), a rise in the price of a substitute, a fall in the price of a complement, or a change in taste in the good's favour — the whole curve shifts to the right (from DD to D1D1).

  • Diagram (described): axes price (vertical) and quantity (horizontal); original curve DD and a new curve D1D1 lying to its right. At the same price OP, quantity rises from OQ to OQ1. …
