This chapter, Management of Sporting Events, explains how a sports event is planned, organised and run from start to finish.

  • Functions of sports event management follow the sequence of planning, organising, staffing, directing and controlling — planning sets the goals, organising arranges resources, staffing puts the right people in place, directing leads them, and controlling checks that everything stays on track.
  • Committees are formed across the top, middle and lower levels of management. Under the Organising Committee, four committees usually share the work: the Technical, Logistics, Finance and Marketing committees, each with pre-event, during-event and post-event responsibilities.
  • Fixtures and tournaments may be Knock-Out (a team is out once it loses; matches = N − 1; byes = next power of two − N), League / Round Robin (every team plays every other; matches = N(N − 1) / 2), or a Combination of both. Byes and seeding keep the draw fair and protect strong teams in the early rounds.
  • Intramural tournaments are held within one institution and aim at mass participation and all-round development, while extramural tournaments are held between different institutions and push players towards higher performance.
