Classification and divisioning both exist to stop disability-sport results being decided by who happens to have the mildest impairment or the most natural ability — they level the playing field, the same way age/gender/weight categories do in mainstream sport.

The textbook introduces both concepts together with one shared purpose: "The concept of Classification and Divisioning is a process used in disability sports for providing even and fair competition for athletes with disability through grouping of athletes. The purpose is very much similar to grouping system used in mainstream sports according to their age-group, gender, weight etc. The general goal... is to reduce or minimize the effect of sports performance due to any of the above-mentioned variables like age, gender, weight or even abilities."
